Things to Do in Polk County

Located in Lake Wales, The Bok Tower Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, is a 250-acre garden. In this garden, you will find a bird sanctuary, as well as a 205-foot tall Singing Tower, complete with carillon bells. The tower itself sits on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in the state of Florida. Also on the property, you will find a library, walking trails, and a museum. Open daily, The Bok Tower Gardens is the perfect place for a peaceful evening learning about history and connecting with nature.

For folks looking for thrills, Polk County is home to LEGOLAND Florida, where you will find entire cities made of Legos, as well as interactive exhibits and plenty of rides. Polk County is also a short drive away from such theme parks like Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, Sea World, Universal Studios, and Walt Disney World.

If you fancy culture and history, then the Polk County Historical Museum and the Polk Museum of Art are right up your alley. Located in the old Polk County Courthouse, the Polk County Historical Museum features exhibits about local and regional history, including cultural objects like fossils, arts, and tools.In the Polk Museum of Art, you will find art from the Pre-Columbian era all the way to today’s modern and contemporary styles.

Home to the largest private collection of aircraft, you will find over 50 different planes from throughout history. There is even a restaurant on the grounds called Compass Rose Diner.

Polk County is home to several universities including Polk State College, Southeastern University, Florida Southern College, Florida Polytechnic University, Warner University, and Webber University. In addition, for folks with school-age children, Polk County has a multitude of top schools to choose from. Residents can choose from 126 Elementary schools, 76 middle schools, and 66 high schools. According to The Leger, the highest rated elementary school in Polk County is Lincoln Avenue Academy. For middle schools, Lawton Chiles Middle Academy is the top rated, while Lakeland Senior High School is the best high school in the county.
